The style this client requested for his home on a hill was "Hill Country Contemporary.” He desired the warmth and charm of a rustic lodge, but with modern conveniences and size to accommodate a large family. He also liked clean lines and contemporary design, our primary challenge was balancing these styles. He also prioritized sustainability, so energy efficiency and environmental factors were considered with each design decision.

In the kitchen we achieved this rustic/contemporary balance via warm colors and textures accentuated by select modern design elements. Around the perimeter we used dark granite countertops with cherry cabinets, and with the island added a pop of color and the practicality of a butcher-block countertop. The most dramatic lighting selection was the use of large-scale pendants hanging above the island. These added a contemporary touch but with warm color and texture, which brought the scale of the high ceiling down to a more personal level.
